Never Losing Hope in Allah’s Mercy
There are moments in life when we feel completely surrounded by darkness.
We may not know what to do. We may regret something we have done. We may feel that our situation is impossible to change.
But the story of Yunus عليه السلام reminds us of something our hearts often forget:
No matter how deep the darkness, Allah’s mercy can still reach us.
Yunus عليه السلام was a prophet of Allah who was sent to guide his people. His story takes us from the struggle of calling people to Allah, to the depths of the sea, to the darkness within the belly of a great creature, and finally to Allah’s mercy and rescue.
It is a story about turning back.
A story about admitting our weakness.
And above all, a story about never giving up hope in Allah.
The Prophet Who Called His People
Yunus عليه السلام was one of the prophets sent by Allah to guide his people.
He called them towards the worship of Allah and warned them against turning away from Him. But his people did not accept his message easily.
He continued calling them, yet they remained resistant.
Eventually, Yunus عليه السلام became deeply distressed by their rejection and left them before Allah’s command for him to do so.
He travelled away and eventually boarded a ship.
He did not know that this journey would lead him into one of the greatest trials of his life.
A Ship Caught in the Storm
The ship sailed out to sea.
Then the situation suddenly changed.
The sea became dangerous, and the people on the ship feared that the vessel would not be able to continue safely.
They drew lots to determine who would have to leave the ship.
The name of Yunus عليه السلام was drawn.
The Qur’an tells us that he was among those who were cast into the sea.
And then came the moment when Yunus عليه السلام found himself alone in the vastness of the ocean.
No people around him.
No land in sight.
Nothing he could rely on except Allah.
Into the Darkness
Allah decreed that a great fish would swallow Yunus عليه السلام.
He was not killed.
He was not abandoned.
He was in a place where, from a human perspective, there seemed to be absolutely no way out.
The Qur’an describes him as being in the darknesses.
Imagine the helplessness of that moment.
The darkness of the night.
The darkness of the sea.
And the darkness surrounding him.
Yet even there, Allah could hear him.
Even there, Allah knew where he was.
Even there, Allah’s mercy had not left him.
This is one of the most powerful lessons of the story:
You can be hidden from the entire world and still be completely known to Allah.
The Dua in the Darkness
Yunus عليه السلام did not call out to another human being.
He turned directly to Allah.
He said:
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.
“There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
Qur’an 21:87
These words are simple, but they carry enormous meaning.
Yunus عليه السلام began by affirming the greatness and oneness of Allah:
There is no one worthy of worship except You.
Then he glorified Allah:
You are perfect and free from every imperfection.
And then he acknowledged his own weakness:
Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers.
There was no arrogance.
No excuse.
No blaming others.
He simply turned back to his Lord.
Allah Heard Him
Yunus عليه السلام was in a situation that appeared impossible.
But Allah tells us what happened next:
“So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.”
Qur’an 21:88
What a promise.
Allah did not say that He saved only Yunus عليه السلام.
He said:
“And thus do We save the believers.”
His story becomes a reminder for every believer who finds themselves in distress.
Your darkness may look different.
Your test may not resemble his.
You may be struggling with grief, fear, loneliness, regret, uncertainty or a problem that you cannot see a way out of.
But the One who heard Yunus عليه السلام in the darkness can hear you too.
Allah Brought Him Back to the Shore
Allah caused Yunus عليه السلام to be brought out and cast onto the shore while he was ill.
Allah then caused a gourd plant to grow over him, providing him with protection and comfort.
Allah cared for him after his hardship.
His rescue was not simply an escape from danger.
It was a reminder of Allah’s care.
Sometimes we only understand Allah’s mercy after we have passed through something difficult.
At the time, all we can see is the hardship.
Later, we may look back and realise how Allah carried us through it.
The People of Yunus
There is another beautiful part of the story that is easy to overlook.
Yunus عليه السلام’s people eventually believed.
The Qur’an tells us that when the people of Yunus believed, Allah removed the punishment of disgrace from them and allowed them to enjoy life for a time.
Qur’an 10:98
This is a powerful reminder that people can change.
Someone who seems far from Allah today may return tomorrow.
Someone who has made mistakes may repent.
Someone who has rejected guidance may eventually open their heart to it.
So never decide that someone is beyond Allah’s mercy.
What Can We Learn From Yunus عليه السلام?
1. Never Despair of Allah’s Mercy
Yunus عليه السلام was in a situation that seemed impossible.
Yet Allah saved him.
When life feels overwhelming, do not allow your difficulty to convince you that Allah’s mercy is far away.
A difficult moment is not the end of your story.
2. Turn to Allah in Your Lowest Moments
Yunus عليه السلام turned to Allah when he had nowhere else to turn.
That is something we can learn from.
When you are happy, turn to Allah.
When you are confused, turn to Allah.
When you are afraid, turn to Allah.
And when you feel completely broken, turn to Allah.
Allah is not only the Lord of your good days. He is your Lord in every moment.
3. Admit Your Mistakes
The dua of Yunus عليه السلام contains an important quality:
acknowledgement.
He did not try to justify himself.
He recognised his own wrong.
There is strength in being able to say:
“Ya Allah, I was wrong. Forgive me.”
Repentance is not a sign that you are worthless.
It is a sign that your heart still wants to return to Allah.
4. Your Situation Is Never Too Difficult for Allah
To us, some problems appear impossible.
But nothing is difficult for Allah.
The One who saved Yunus عليه السلام from the depths of the sea can change circumstances that seem impossible to us.
The answer may not come exactly when we expect it.
It may not come in the way we imagined.
But Allah’s power is never limited by our circumstances.
5. Being Tested Does Not Mean Allah Has Abandoned You
Sometimes hardship makes us ask:
“Why is Allah letting this happen to me?”
The story of Yunus عليه السلام teaches us to look at hardship differently.
A test can become a means of returning to Allah.
A moment of weakness can become a moment of sincere dua.
A painful experience can bring a heart closer to its Creator.
Do not measure Allah’s love by how easy your life is.
Sometimes the hardest moments become the moments that transform us the most.
The Dua of Yunus عليه السلام
لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin
“There is no deity except You; glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
A Dua for Times of Distress
When your heart feels heavy, pause.
Put your phone down.
Take a breath.
Turn towards Allah.
And remember the words of Yunus عليه السلام.
You do not need perfect words to speak to Allah.
You only need sincerity.
Pause & Reflect
What darkness are you facing right now?
Maybe nobody knows what you are carrying.
Maybe you smile in front of everyone while fighting a battle inside.
Maybe you are waiting for something that seems to be taking too long.
Maybe you regret something from your past.
Maybe you are afraid of what tomorrow will bring.
Remember Yunus عليه السلام.
He was surrounded by darkness, but he was never outside the knowledge of Allah.
Your situation may be hidden from people, but it is never hidden from Allah.
So keep turning back to Him.
Keep making dua.
Keep asking for forgiveness.
Keep hoping.
Because the story of Yunus عليه السلام does not end in the darkness.
It ends with Allah’s mercy.
A Message to Carry With You
You may not know how Allah will change your situation.
You may not know when relief will come.
You may not even be able to see a way forward.
But you can still have hope.
The darkness does not mean Allah cannot see you.
The delay does not mean Allah has forgotten you.
The mistake does not mean you cannot return.
And the hardship does not mean your story is over.
Turn back to Allah.
Trust His mercy.
And never lose hope in Him.
From Darkness to Light
The story of Yunus عليه السلام is not simply a story about a prophet and a great fish.
It is a story about the human heart.
A heart that can become overwhelmed.
A heart that can make mistakes.
A heart that can feel trapped.
But also a heart that can turn back to Allah.
And when it does, it discovers that Allah’s mercy was never far away.
“And thus do We save the believers.”
