The migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE marked a decisive new chapter for the early Muslim community.
The Hijrah was the migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the early Muslims from Makkah to Yathrib, later known as Madinah, in 622 CE. It followed years of opposition in Makkah and an invitation from people in Yathrib who sought the Prophet’s leadership.
Why it mattered
In Madinah, the Muslim community could worship openly and organise its shared religious and civic life. The event became so important that the Islamic lunar calendar takes the Hijrah as its starting point.
